Experimentation: a digital fiction series co-written by an AI and a human

Michel Levy Provençal, co-founder of Brightness and author of several futuristic books and the Brightness method of story-telling, is experimenting with the use of AI to enrich the writing process of a digital fiction series.

The series is presented as a programme of texts, illustrations and podcasts. He describes the writing process in an article on his blog. The experimental series is currently being written and is available to read as it progresses.

The writing process described by Michel Levy Provençal on his blog is broken down as follows:

  1. A first step is to gather pre-existing monitoring content, ideas, notes, publications and columns and produce a synthesis broken down into detailed chapter headings or scenes in the form of bullet points. This task is performed by a Human.

  2. For each chapter, the bullet points serve as a basis for a text-generating AI to write portions of the text. This task is performed by an AI.

  3. Each section of text is then reworked, corrected and adapted. This task is carried out by a Human.

  4. Several iterations of steps 2 and 3 are performed. The hybrid intelligence is fully in action during this loop.

  5. Once a chapter is written, a chapter title is extracted. This set constitutes an episode of the series. This step is carried out by a Human.

  6. The title is used as input to generate one or more episode illustrations.

  7. The text of the episode is then fed into a text to speech tool to generate dialogues. This step is performed by an AI.

  8. Part of the text of each episode is spoken and recorded and then all the sound elements are mixed. This task is performed by a human.
